2ND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF AERIAL ARCHAEOLOGY
From Aerostats to Drones: aerial imagery in Archaeology”
Rome, 3-5 February 2016

--NEW--

Proceedings publication: extended deadline for texts submission

30 April 2016

Dear Friends, dear Colleagues,

In the past weeks, we received several request for an extension of the deadline for the submission of the texts for the publication of the proceedings of the 2nd International Conference of Aerial Archaeology. We are therefore pleased to inform you that to allow all contributors to join this enterprise, we extended the deadline until 30th April.

This extended deadline has to be intended as definitive. Not receiving any manuscript from you, we would consider this as a renounce to the publication. Kindest regards,

The Organising Committee AA2016

6th CIRCULAR

Dear Colleagues,
the 2nd International Conference of Aerial Archaeology ended in the best of ways. It was an extraordinary success (we recorded more than 500 participants in addition to the speakers and poster presenters), and was scientifically very interesting.
We sincerely thank you for your precious contribution to the good outcome of the meeting.
As anticipated, we inform you that the deadline for the submission of the contributions for the publication of the proceedings of the conference is strictly fixed on the 10th April 2016.
The proceedings of the Conference will be published in the number 10° of the journal “Archeologia Aerea. Studi di Aerotopografia Archeologica”, which will be fully devoted to the event.
We have decided to accept papers in ENGLISH and ITALIAN, but they will need to conform to the attached Editorial Guidelines. All texts will be peer-reviewed.
Please, take into account that the language and the respect of the editorial rules will be an essential issue in the acceptance of the paper. So, all those of you who will decide to write in English or Italian not being native speakers are given the suggestion to make their text been proof-read by specialists.
The contributions that will not be submitted by the deadline and those that will not be respecting the editorial rules will be rejected by the editorial board. We are very sorry, but considering thetechnological aspects of many of the contributions, the journal will need to be published by the end of the year.
Papers will have to respect the following length:
- Keynote speakers: max. 24000 characters (spaces included) and 12 images;
- oral presentations: max. 20000 characters (spaces included) and 10 images;
- posters: max 12000 characters (spaces included) and 6 images.

5th CIRCULAR

Dear Colleague(s),

the 2nd International Conference on Aerial Archaeology is finally coming. Therefore, we kindly ask you to inform us if some problems have arisen for your participation by Tuesday 2nd February, since starting from Wednesday morning we will not be easily reachable.

We are pleased to inform you that the programme of the 2nd International Conference on Aerial Archaeology is now defined and we are progressing in scheduling the speeches in the three intense days of the event.

We kindly remind you that SPEECHES CANNOT EXCEED 20 MINUTES. It would even be preferable if you could limit your presentation to 15 minutes and leave some space for questions. The agenda of the conference is very tight and we will be obliged to respect the timing very carefully.

Considering the ‘tightness’ of the programme, we kindly ask you to provide us with your power points presentations at the latest before the beginning of the morning session, in case you presentation is scheduled in the morning (before 9 AM), and before the beginning of the afternoon session if your presentation is scheduled in the afternoon (before 2.30 PM).

Because of organisational needs, it will not be possible to upload your PPTs during the coffee breaks.

Given the time constrains, we kindly ask you to avoid the use of personal portable computers. Rather, please provide a USB key to our collaborators.

Poster presenters are asked to display their posters before the beginning of the morning session of the scheduled day (before 9 AM) because the organisation staff will be available only in that time slot. Posters will have to be removed before the end of the afternoon session (19/19.30).

We ask again to everybody to register for the conference, downloading the registration form from the website, and sending it duly filled to: labtaf@unisalento.it. Registration is free but is needed for security reasons.

We kindly ask you to transfer this information to the co-authors of your presentation.

3rd CIRCULAR

Dear Colleagues,

we are pleased to inform you that the programme of the 2nd International Conference on Aerial Archaeology is now defined and we are progressing in scheduling the speeches in the three intense days of the event.

Therefore, we can confirm that your presentation will be scheduled on Wednesday/Thursday/Friday morning/afternoon or in the course of the 2nd session that will be held on three days of the conference.

We kindly remind you that speeches cannot exceed 20 minutes. It would even be preferable if you could limit your presentation to 15 minutes and leave some space for questions. The agenda of the conference is very tight and we will be obliged to respect the timing very carefully.

Considering the unfortunate coincidence with the extraordinary Jubilee announced by pope Franciscus, we warmly suggest you to proceed with the reservation of your lodging and the booking of your stay: prices will increase considerably very soon.

About lodging, we have been able to negotiate discounted rates at the Duke Hotel that will provide a complementary shuttle service connecting Piazzale Flaminio/Piazza del Popolo and piazza Pitagora with the Hotel and the conference venue at the Academia Belgica. In both the shuttle terminals you will be able to find public transport connections.

The booking form is available at the link: booking form.pdf - booking form.doc.

All offers are subjected to availability and they can be booked only until 20th December 2015.

The Conference dinner will be held in the same hotel at the price of 35 euro p.p. (a three courses meal with drinks included) on Thursday 4th February in the evening. Reservation for the dinner will be possible until Wednesday 3rd February at the conference secretariat. Payment will be done on site.

As alternative, you can book at the Hotel Rivoli Best Western (www.hotelrivoliroma.com), also located in the neighbourhood, by inserting the special code for discount ACCBE2016 in the field ‘promotional code’. Please, take into account that the discount can only be applied on a minimum of two nights.

All these discounted rates are subject to availability, so you’d better book as early as possible.

Considering the problems with security and to prepare a list of participants, we kindly ask all people that will attend the conference to fill the registration form

registration_form.pdf - registration_form.pdf with image of conference

registration_form.doc - registration_form.doc with image of conference

and send it to the conference organisation: labtaf@unisalento.it

We kindly ask you to inform the co-authors of your presentation of all necessary practical details.

Kindest regards,

The Organising Committee

2nd CIRCULAR

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

we sincerely thank you for the enthusiastic participation to the call for the 2nd International Conference of Aerial Archaeology (AA2016). Indeed, the number of proposals (more than 140) is much higher than the number of oral presentations that we will be able to schedule during the three days of the conference. Therefore, it will not be possible to accept all proposals as oral presentation. Be sure that we will try to insert as many presentations as possible in the Poster Session.

Considering the huge work of selection and assessment of the abstracts, we will not be able to inform you about the outcome of the evaluation before the end of October.

After confirmation, we will publish the official programme.

Further information will be available on the conference website: www.archeologia-aerea.it

Best greetings,

The organising committee AA2016

1st CIRCULAR

A few years after the 1st International Conference of Aerial Archaeology (Rome, 15-16 April 2009), the Laboratory of Ancient Topography and Photogrammetry (LABTAF) of the University of Salento, together with Ghent University (Belgium) and the University of Cassino, will organise a second event at the prestigious seat of the Academia Belgica in Rome, with the aim of rounding up the newest trends and acquisitions in the field of aerial survey and remote sensing in Archaeology. Hoping to give a fairly representative view of what are the main attitudes and basic methodologies that drive the Italian and international scene, our goal is to set up a dynamic meeting, open not only to the small circle of archaeologists, but extended to a wider public of specialists.

The Conference will be divided in four sessions:
Session 1: state of the art, pioneering research and historical aerial imagery;
Session 2: methodology and applications of aerial photo-interpretation and finalised photogrammetry;
Session 3: presentation of projects which make systematic use of aerial photo interpretation;
Session 4: entitled "Drones in Archaeology" will be devoted to applications of UAVs and new technologies connected to their use, with case-studies from Italy and abroad.

UAVs (or drones) are experiencing a growing exploitation thanks to the easy use and their low cost. A wide range of models and types is available on the market, but only few of them are suitable for scientific applications in the sector of Cultural Heritage.

After the first pioneering applications, mainly focused on photogrammetic aerial survey, the use of UAVs extended to topographical survey and geomatics, 3D scanning, technical architectural drawing, mapping and monitoring of sites and of wider regions, turning them into very useful instruments for data-capturing, site management, documentation, environmental heritage preservation and management. UAVs became tools for producing detailed documentation in a short time and with low cost, and for efficient mapping of archaeological and architectural heritage, offering a diversified scale and resolution for every specific need. Furthermore, they have become more and more instruments for detection and survey.

Each session will include a key note lecture, oral presentations and posters.

The poster session will be held in the hall of the Academia Belgica.
